China Now Has 2.22 Million 5G Base Stations

As shown by a recent report released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), China has made steady strides in building its communication capability. As of the end of September, China has built 10.72 million mobile communication base stations, a net increase of 754,000 from the end of the previous year. Among them, the total number of 5G base stations climbed by 795,000 to 2.22 million compared with the end of the previous year. Accounting for 20.7% of the total mobile base stations, the proportion of 5G base stations grows at a faster pace of 6.4 percentage than at the end of the previous year.

Additionally, China also witnessed steady growth in the length of the optical cable line. As of the end of September, China has built a 58.76 million kilometers optical cable line, up 6% year on year with a net increase of 3.956 million kilometers from the end of the previous year. The proportion of access network cable, local network relay cable and long-distance cable line is 62.2%, 36% and 1.8%, respectively.

China continues shoring up gigabit network construction. By the end of September, the number of Internet broadband access ports in China has reached 1.055 billion, a net increase of 36.98 million over the previous year. Among them, fiber access (FTTH/O) ports reached 1.008 billion, a net increase of 47.74 million compared with the end of the previous year. That contributes to 95.5% of internet broadband ports with a 1.2% rise from the end of last year. As of the end of September, the number of 10G PON ports able to provide gigabit network service reaches 12.68 million, mounting by 4.822 million from the end of the previous year.
